Toomp And Fest

This a video I shot and edited last year. Rhymefest is a real cool cat. He made a fan of me while we were in the studio. He's very interesting dude.

Dont Disturb the Groove

Making music is an intimate activity. Anyone with any kind of experience has worked with an artist that wants all the lights off in the booth when they are recording. We all know the producer that wont work with other people in the room. Eryka Badu said it best "Im an artist and Im sensitive about my shit"lol.

Me being an engineer, I have to pay special attention and make sure that I don't disturb the overall vibe of the artist(s). This is something that I've seen make or break certain engineers. You can be a beast in whatever technical side of music making, but if your vibe doesnt sit right the clients will never call u back. Hell, they might make a request with the studio that you NOT be booked for their sessions.

I think one of the reasons i have had some sucess as a recording engineer is that I'm able to make people feel at ease with my presence, this is an ez thing for me to do but I've seen other engineers have serious problems with it.

The key thing for me is to SHUTUP. Many times I meet an artist for the first time and we get right to work, when this happens I become a pro tools operator only. I dont make any creative suggestions. I dont make any jokes. I dont hit the blunt(I never hit the blunt during sessions anyway so this is not hard). Its ezier for me to feel the clients out if initially I'm invisible.

A few tips on how not to disturb the Groove.

1. DON'T LOUD TALK! Being in a particular session might be exciting but dont let ur excitement get the best of you.

2.IF YOU'RE A VISITOR YOU DONT HAVE AN ASSIGNED SEAT!! I've witnessed many a visitor kill the vibe and themselves by posting up in the wrong spot.

3.IF YOUR'E NOT PAYING FOR THE SESSION MAKE SURE ITS COOL BEFORE U GIVE THE ENGINEER DIRECTIONS. This one hits home for me. I've been asked by many visitors to play a cd or something. I always check with the client first. Dont be the one to get a funny look.

4.IT'S NOT YOUR SONG! Making suggestions about creative aspects of the music is cool. You just have to be careful. Check the vibe of the session/artist. And if its cool, make ur suggestion once and in a respectful manner.

5.ONE INVITE MEANS ONE VISIT! Just becuz ur visit is cool one day, doesn't mean that its cool for the next day. Try to get Ok's for every visit u make to the studio. I've had to ask an artist that I'm fan of to leave a session. It was not pretty.

Pls keep in mind that these are my opinions and most of my recent experiences are with major label recording artists at some of the bigger studios.

Peace
